Students get to work on their very own musical production of “The Wiz” and see the Broadway show “WICKED,” demonstrating the real-world application of STEAM concepts in entertainment.
The Jr. STEM Academy's STEAM Summer Camp offers middle school students a unique blend of science, technology, engineering, art, and math through a hands-on musical production. Students will collaborate to bring a full production of “The Wiz” to life, both on stage and behind the scenes. This immersive experience allows participants to develop acting techniques, vocal skills, and choreography in the performing arts module. They will also apply geometry and measurement to construct set elements, design and 3D print custom props, and program LED lights for costumes using coding. Drones will be utilized for lighting and special effects, providing a comprehensive understanding of how STEM concepts integrate with creative entertainment. The camp aims to advance students' skills, ignite career ambitions, and demonstrate that STEM can be creative, fun, and engaging.
A typical day involves students working on various modules related to the musical production, such as rehearsing performing arts, constructing set designs, 3D printing props, or coding lighting and special effects, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
This camp is best for middle school students (rising 6th to 8th graders) who are interested in exploring the intersection of STEM and performing arts through a collaborative musical production.
