MathILy offers an intensive, inquiry-based residential experience where students actively discover and prove mathematical conjectures, fostering creative and rigorous mathematical thinking in a collaborative environment.
MathILy is an intensive five-week residential summer program designed for mathematically excellent secondary students. The program focuses on inquiry-based learning, where students explore and create advanced mathematics, improve problem-solving skills, and hone their overall thinking abilities. The curriculum is structured into a 2-1-2 format: two weeks of "Root Class" covering foundational topics through inquiry-based problems, followed by a "Week of Chaos" with many short classes on diverse topics suggested by students and instructors, and concluding with two weeks of "Branch Classes" offering more specialized and advanced topics. Students learn by actively conjecturing, proving, and collaborating, rather than through traditional lectures. The program aims to foster serious mathematical thinking infused with levity, encouraging curiosity and creative approaches to learning. Participants gain experience with undergraduate and graduate-level discrete mathematics, developing strong thinking, problem-solving, and mathematical writing habits that are beneficial for collegiate mathematics and various research fields.
A typical day begins with breakfast, followed by a morning class session of interactive lectures and problem-solving. After lunch, the afternoon is mostly free for relaxation, social activities, or additional study, sometimes including writing summaries of lessons. The evening features a "Daily Gather" for informal mathematical discussions, games, and collaborative problem-solving, followed by another class session and ending with social activities or downtime.
MathILy is designed for high school students with an insatiable curiosity about mathematics, who are creative and enthusiastic in their approaches to learning, and are drawn to mathematical thinking itself rather than just credentials.
